For all the writers, photo techs, designers and copy editors that played a part in my internship this summer, I dedicated this post to you. Photographers and writers are like apples and oranges. We're both fruit but oranges kick way more ass than apples in the juice and candy flavoring category, but seriously no one would make an orange pie when they could make one from apples. I think I've made my point, right? While we rarely see eye to eye on our importance to a newspaper and which one of us truly ranks above the other, I think we all know the vital role we play and how insignificant we are compared to the designers who hold the true power at the newspaper. Who has the power to make 10 inches of your story disappear? You editor. Why? A designer probably made them when they saw the hole on the page. The same goes for photos. Most overlooked at any paper though, are probably the copy editors, and their photographic counterpart, the photo techs. Without The Bee's awesome photo techs my photos would probably all have looked more magenta than the press already made them look. Scott and Patti, and even Randall on occasion, are frequently overlooked as they spend their day staring at every pixel of each image making sure everything looks as good as possible. Their work behind the scenes help make my work look it's best and I really appreciate it if I never said it. On the other end are the copy editors, who do the same for writers. If it weren't for all the copy editors at The Bee, my captions would probably have been correct... I mean incorrect... more. They definitely would have been generic and bland. So thank you all for everything you did for me this summer. Writers, thank you for the opportunity to cover some great stories. Designers, thank you for giving my photos awesome play and giving me the chance to have nearly 300,000 people see one of my photos run over six columns. Copy Editors, thank you for correcting my horrible grammar and expanding my generic captions. Photo Techs, thanks for knowing more about photoshop than any person should and making my photos look as good as they possibly can. Aside from my general thanks to all of you, some of you really made my internship and helped me a lot along the way. Bobby: Thanks for being a great mentor and friend and someone I could always go to with a problem and get some solid advice. Thanks for offering advice even when I didn't know I needed it. It's not often you get to say you worked with, "the Biggest Jerk in America," or whatever your official title is, but I'm glad I got the chance. You're not nearly as jerky as you appear. Gina: I hope you're happy, you finally get your thank you! I will say every time I saw your name on a photo request any fears I had of it being a dull assignment were instantly quelled. You provided me with some great opportunities for photos and probably the assignment I enjoyed the most at the mosque downtown. I have to say you gave me the quickest assignment ever too at that gym, but it did allow me to sprint back to Sacramento and cover Prop. 8 stuff so I'm thankful for that too. Janet: Thank you for being the resident house mother to all of us interns every Friday at intern lunch. We should have started a pool on what we were going to get each week. My favorite was definitely the mac & cheese. There was no reason you had to do that for us each week, but you did anyway and we were all thankful. Dixie: Thank you for doing such an awesome job with my baseball story. I have to admit I was confused when the assignment went to features, but I couldn't have drawn a better writer and can't imagine anyone doing a better job on the story. It was a project I'd pursued my whole journalistic career and I couldn't be happier with how it came out. Who knows, maybe we'll even win the "August Surprise." Scott: Thanks for helping me with what were probably some of the simplest things time and time again. I wouldn't have had that aged film filter on my baseball story without you. I wouldn't know how to do .pdf clips without you. I wouldn't have that first plane crash photo without you either. Like I said above, most of the work you do goes unnoticed, but we all owe a lot to what you and Patti do every day. Sue: I don't know exactly how many of my photos you designed on a page, but I know every time you had one to play it showed up great. You were one of the big reasons I came out here and I'm glad to have had a chance to work with and get to know you. I know you're going to have a fantastic time at Ohio University and I hope we get a chance to meet up in Athens. You're a great designer and great picture editor and I hope you get a chance to grow in Ohio and let that creative side have fun again. Thank you all for a great summer, I can't wait to work with every one of you again one day.
